Three years ago, the United States suffered one of the most severe storm seasons on record, and in 2005 Hurricane Katrina changed the business models evaluate risk. Yet the 2006 storm season was extraordinarily quiet. With more and more commercial and residential development located in areas vulnerable to storm damage, the role of effective catastrophe modelling has never been more important.

Catastrophe Modelling from a European Perspective is the first ever event hosted jointly by the International Underwriting Association and the Reinsurance Association of America. It presents an independent view of catastrophe modelling applications with particular emphasis on their practical usefulness for underwriters and impact on European insurance and reinsurance markets.

Learning Objectives

The seminar will examine how we use models, how this impacts our decision processes, and how recent events may impact both the primary and reinsurance markets in future years. Presentations from leading experts in the field will provide a wide range of useful information and informed analysis. There will also be much opportunity for discussion allowing insurance and reinsurance decision makers to obtain greater confidence in the use of modelling technology to estimate the financial impact of natural catastrophes and other extreme events.

  • Explore recent developments in the catastrophe modelling process.
  • Gain new catastrophe management skills and experience alternative viewpoints specific to your level of interest and experience.
  • Understand how to manage modelling uncertainty in today’s demanding environment.
  • Learn to realise maximum benefits from using modelling technology.
